[white tea vs black tea]Both green and black teas are good drinks, but they contain varying amounts of nutrients that should provide different health benefits. Knowing each type of tea will help you choose the right one. Both green and black teas can be made from the same tea tree, while green tea is minimally processed, black tea has undergone an oxidation process, called fermentation.
Good for bones and teeth
Both black and green teas help strengthen bones and teeth due to their high levels of fluoride, but black tea contains more fluoride. The body can combine fluoride in the diet with hydroxyapatite to form bone tissue and increase bone tissue. Fluoride supplements help harden teeth and prevent tooth decay.
Black tea contains 0.2 - 0.5mg of fluoride per cup, while green tea provides about 0.3 - 0.4mg. Making tea with tap water adds fluoride. A cup of black tea about 240ml made from tap water contains about 0.9mg of fluoride.
Prevention of cancer
Green tea is often mentioned for its anti-cancer benefits. Green tea is rich in catechin compounds called epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, that help protect genes, against the growth of cancer cells.
A study published in the Journal of Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology in 2013 showed that EGCG helps kill skin cancer cells. Another study in November 2013 also showed that EGCG has the same effect on colon cancer cells. The study also found that EGCG prevents metastatic colon cancer genes, meaning that the EGCG in green tea can fight metastatic cancer.
Protect the heart
Both black and green tea is good for the heart. The EGCG in green tea is beneficial for cells lining the blood vessels, promoting good physiological processes for cells. Green tea also helps control blood cholesterol levels, increases the amount of good cholesterol, reduces bad cholesterol.
Drinking black tea also helps improve blood vessel function, good for people with coronary artery disease.
